GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Supplemental Summer Support Application

All continuing students who receive a Fellowship, Teaching Assistantship, or Graduate Assistantship during this academic year may apply for the Supplemental Summer Research Fellowship or SSRF (up to $4,000 per student) to support your research and academic activities, such as conducting research activities toward your degree, taking a language course required by your graduate program, participating in a fieldwork project, and presenting research at a conference. Furthermore, students who assist in faculty research activities and/or undergraduate student research mentoring may apply for additional Research Assistantship (RA) support (up to $2,500).

All requests will be reviewed by the Dean of Graduate Studies in consultation with the graduate departments, as necessary. Applicants will be notified of the funding decision by April 19, 2024.

Students who receive SSRF and/or RA are required to (1) participate in a 2-hour Summer Research Orientation at the beginning of May 2024, (2) submit a summer research report (~500 words) by August 15, 2024, and (3) present their summer research achievements in either a 3-minute research talk or a digital poster to the GSAS community at the Welcome-Back Picnic in Fall 2024.

Once this application is submitted, all the faculty you have provided emails for will automatically receive your completed application.

Indicate the type of supplemental summer support you are applying for:
The SSRF application requires a PDF file of a 250-word essay with the signature of the faculty member who approved your application. In the essay, please describe your summer research and/or academic projects to be supported, providing information on your academic goals, planned activities with a timeline, and the impacts of the proposed projects on your academic progress toward your degree. Additionally, if your summer plans include conference, fieldwork, or summer courses, proof of acceptance and a travel plan with a budget breakdown should be provided as supporting materials.
The RA application requires a PDF file of a 250-word essay, signed by the RA supervisor. In the essay, please provide the RA job description, estimated weekly working hours to assist faculty research activities and/or undergraduate student research mentoring (up to 20 hours per week), and estimated total RA working hours for the summer (up to 120 hours).
Are you expecting to receive any other support from a BMC or non-BMC source?
