Tax Information
Fellowships (GSAS fellowships, named fellowships, graduate assistantships, research assistantships, GSAS grants, named grants, summer stipends) are taxable income unless used to directly pay for qualified expenses required of all students (tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment) in an academic program.
To aid students in preparing their taxes, the total amount of fellowship payments issued during the year is provided in a letter sent to students, annually. U.S. citizens and Resident Aliens must declare their fellowship stipends as income when they file their tax returns, and they will be responsible for paying any tax that might be levied at that time. Instructions for reporting fellowship stipends can be found in IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education, which is available on the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/uac/about-publication-970). Non-Resident Aliens (i.e., students in F-1 or J-1 status) will be charged a tax amount (in most cases 14% of the stipend) on their Bryn Mawr College account after the stipend is paid. The tax will be remitted to the IRS. At the end of the calendar year, fellowship amounts and taxes remitted will be reported to the IRS and the student on Form 1042-S.
For information about treaty eligibility, please refer to IRS Publication 901, U.S. Tax Treaties, posted at
https://www.irs.gov/uac/about-publication-901
